What if everything about life—everything anyone hoped to be, to do, to experience—never happens?
Whether sitting in a chair, driving down the road, in surgery, jumping off a cliff or flying … that’s where you’d be … forever.
Unless …
In One More Day, Erika Beebe, Marissa Halvorson, Kimberly Kay, J. Keller Ford, Danielle E. Shipley and Anna Simpson join L.S. Murphy to give us their twists, surprising us with answers to two big questions, all from the perspective of characters under the age of eighteen.
How do we restart time?
How do we make everything go back to normal?
The answers, in whatever the world—human, alien, medieval, fantasy or fairytale—could, maybe, happen today.
Right now.
What would you do if this happened … to you?
And I asked Anna the same question as Danielle: What, in your opinion, would be the implications on the world of time freezing, once it has unfrozen? Anna answered:
First off thank you Marissa for having me as a guest. This whole anthology thing is pretty great. Gets us thinking about time and how it works.
Like does time freezing mean the world freezes? Everyone frozen in a random moment. Then once the thaw comes everyone is released to continue doing whatever they were doing. Would we notice? My son and I talked about it and we laughed thinking it might have happened a thousand times and we never noticed.
But what if we could be stuck in a time loop? One that may never end, gets shorter/longer, we don't remember, or one we do remember. If the human race repeated a determined period of time that could be remembered, would that be bad?
I think all of us would be true to who we are. I'm actually not worried about the moral, law abiding citizens of the world. There might be some stress because our children would never grow up. I don't want to imagine a new mother getting up at two AM every night for the rest of her never-ending days.
Not a pretty thought. I'm pretty sure heads would roll—eventually.
Think of all the people that break the law. Now think of them not having to pay consequences. When the loop began its new beginning, everything as it was before it ended, as if the biggest reset button had been pushed, then what? Everyone looking around figuring it out with the memories of the previous loops still in the forefront of their minds, what would happen?
Would more people be murdered, robbed, abused all because it would be undone. Would there be arrests before the crime took place? Or would the evildoer stop because it wouldn't solve their problem or would the violence escalate? As human beings we learn from natural consequences.
No tomorrow. No consequences. No change. All we would be left with is our reflection in another's eyes. It doesn't sound fun to me.
I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to a changing tomorrow.
What do you think? Tell me what your tomorrow holds.
